The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is Florida's flagship rail trail: roughly 45 miles of paved path running from St. Petersburg north to Tarpon Springs, threaded through a series of towns that are worth stopping in on their own merits.

Almost nobody rides the whole thing in one go. The trail's real value is that you can pick a section, ride to a town, eat, and ride back - and an e-bike makes those sections twice as long.

Route at a glance

The trail follows a former railroad corridor, so it is flat and consistently graded, with a good asphalt surface. It runs behind neighbourhoods, through downtowns, over road crossings and across a number of bridges and overpasses that keep you clear of the busiest junctions.

Signposting is good, mileage markers are frequent, and there are restrooms and water at intervals.

The sections worth riding

St. Petersburg to Largo (about 12 miles). Urban at the southern end, then increasingly leafy. Good surface, plenty of crossings early on.

Largo to Dunedin (about 10 miles). The most popular stretch, and the one to ride if you only ride one. It ends in a town built for a mid-ride lunch - Dunedin's Main Street sits right on the trail, with breweries, cafés and a bike shop or two.

Dunedin to Tarpon Springs (about 11 miles). Quieter, with the Honeymoon Island causeway spur off to the west and the sponge docks and Greek bakeries at the northern end.

The Honeymoon Island spur. Worth the detour on a clear day. Note the causeway is exposed and windy, which is precisely where pedal assist pays for itself.

Shade, wind and timing

Unusually for Florida, the Pinellas Trail has real shade in long stretches, particularly between Largo and Dunedin. That makes it one of the more forgiving summer rides in the state, though the open sections around the causeway and the southern end still bake from May to September.

The prevailing wind is off the Gulf. Riding north in the morning and south in the afternoon usually puts it behind you for the tired half.

Trailheads and parking

The practical trailheads are in downtown Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Seminole, Largo's Central Park and the northern end at Tarpon Springs. Downtown Dunedin parking fills at weekends; arrive early or park a few streets back.

Riding it safely

The Pinellas Trail crosses a lot of roads. Most crossings are signalised or have good visibility, but the trail's popularity means the hazard is usually other trail users rather than cars: dog walkers, runners, families riding two abreast, and skaters.

Ride at a speed that suits the density of the section you are in. The stretch through downtown Dunedin on a Saturday is walking-pace territory.

Frequently asked questions

About 45 miles from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs, plus the Honeymoon Island spur. Most riders cover a 10 to 20 mile section rather than the full length.

Which section of the Pinellas Trail is best?

Largo to Dunedin. It has the best shade, a good surface, and finishes in a town centre that sits directly on the trail. Dunedin to Tarpon Springs is the quieter alternative.

Can I ride an e-bike on the Pinellas Trail?

E-bikes are widely ridden on the trail and every local rental shop supplies them. Class 1 and Class 2 are the usual rentals; if you are bringing a Class 3, check the current local rules first, since faster classes are the ones most often restricted on shared paths.

Dunedin and St. Petersburg have the most rental options close to the trail, with Clearwater and Largo also within easy reach. Renting in Dunedin puts you in the middle of the best section.

Is there shade on the Pinellas Trail?

Yes, more than most Florida trails, especially between Largo and Dunedin. The southern urban sections and the Honeymoon Island causeway are exposed.
